While our roots trace back to Kaufman Footwear Ltd. in the 1950s, we are now a fully independent and privately owned company based in Waterloo, Ontario.

1908
Kaufman Rubber Company Ltd. is founded by Jacob Kaufman in Kitchener (then Berlin), Ontario.
It initially manufactures rubber footwear, including galoshes and work boots.
1920s-1940s
The company expands production to include industrial and outdoor footwear. The company was renamed Kaufman Footwear Ltd. in the 1950s.
1940s-1950s
The Black Diamond brand is launched by Kaufman Footwear, specializing in heavy-duty safety and waterproof boots for industries like logging, mining, and fishing.
Black Diamond becomes known for its toughness and reliability in extreme Canadian weather.
1960s-1980s
The company enjoys wide distribution in Canada and internationally. Products under the Black Diamond name are worn by outdoor workers across Canada.
2000
Kaufman Footwear Ltd. declares bankruptcy.
Assets, brands (including Black Diamond), and some product lines are sold to various entities.
2000s–2010s
Black Diamond Waterproof Clothing Ltd. emerges as a distinct, independently run company, still headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario.
The new company produces waterproof and protective workwear and clothing for industrial sectors such as mining, oil & gas, fishing, forestry, well drilling, and food processing, maintaining the legacy of rugged performance.
2020s – Present
The company repositions itself with a modern, inclusive, and ethical identity,
committed to Canadian manufacturing, safety, and equity.
Zephron™ Trademark
The trademark Zephron™ is an active trademark since March 2004 and registered with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), under registration number – TMA605,003 for Rubberized clothing, namely pants, jackets, coats and hoods.
